Practical Information About Counselling
Counselling session
Counselling can start with your enquiry. I offer an initial session, either in person or by video call, which gives us an opportunity to meet, talk about what is happening for you and what has brought you to counselling.
It is also a chance for you to ask any questions you may have and to get a sense of whether you would like us to work together.
The session will explore your current circumstances and some details of your history. We can use our time together for you to share what is going on in your life and what has brought you to seek counselling.
You do not need to know exactly what you want to say or have everything worked out before you come. We can take some time to explore what is happening for you at a pace that feels comfortable.
In-person and online sessions
I offer both short-term and long-term counselling.
Sessions are available in person in Milton Keynes or through video conferencing if travelling is not possible or desirable for you.
For online sessions, it is helpful to have a private and quiet space where you can talk freely without being overheard. If you are unsure whether online counselling would be suitable for you, we can discuss this together.
Practical information
Here is some practical information you may want to know before your counselling sessions begin.
What you share with me in counselling is treated with respect and confidentiality. Please read the Counselling Agreement, which explains confidentiality and its limits.
We will work through this together in your first session, and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (reference ZA538074).
I take the privacy of your personal information seriously. Your information is stored and handled in accordance with UK data protection requirements.
Please see my Privacy Notice for further information about how your personal information is collected, stored and used.
I make every effort to keep my session prices accessible.
I offer you a fixed appointment time, which will normally be the same day and time each week. Your agreed session time is a regular slot reserved for you.
Fees are payable in cash at our appointment, or by BACS at least one day before the session.
If you need to cancel or miss a session, I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations or missed sessions without at least 24 hours’ notice will incur the full session fee.
Sessions last 60 minutes.
I will let you know the dates when I will be on annual leave well in advance.
I may be away for two to three weeks in the summer or at Christmas, and I may occasionally be away at other times for personal or training reasons.
There will be no requirement to pay for sessions when I am not available.
If you decide that you would like to end or pause counselling, please give at least two sessions’ notice. This gives us more time to review the work we have done together and to work towards bringing the sessions to a considered close.
I believe that having a sense of closure is an important part of ending counselling, whether the ending is temporary or permanent.
If you miss two consecutive sessions without getting in contact, I will assume that you do not wish to continue with counselling and your regular session time will no longer be reserved.
I work from my home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, which is easily accessible by car or bus.
There is a parking space in front of the house. There are no double yellow lines or parking meters.
There is no waiting room, so I ask that clients are mindful of the privacy of others and try to avoid arriving too early for their appointment.
I may be with another client and therefore unable to answer the door.
Counselling sessions are not an emergency or crisis service.
If you need urgent mental health support, please contact your GP or NHS 111 and select the
mental health option. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999
or go to A&E.
