Counselling for individuals

There are times in life when things can feel difficult, overwhelming or hard to make sense of. You may be experiencing a particular problem, going through a difficult period, or simply feel that you are struggling to cope.

Individual counselling offers you a space to talk about what is happening for you and to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. You do not need to know exactly what is wrong, have a diagnosis, or have everything worked out before coming to counselling. I can offer you the time and space to explore what is troubling you, at a pace that feels right for you.

Counselling can be an opportunity to look at difficulties you are experiencing and consider how they may be affecting you and your life. This might include exploring difficult thoughts and feelings, relationships, experiences from the past, changes in your life or ways of coping that may no longer be helping you.

My approach to individual counselling

My focus is on building a trusting and respectful counselling relationship where you can feel able to talk openly about what is happening for you. My work as a counsellor reflects three core beliefs:

Being genuine: I believe that being genuine and authentic is an important part of developing a trusting counselling relationship. This can help you to feel able to explore the issues that have brought you to counselling and begin to find your own way through them.

Being accepting, caring and empathic: I aim to be accepting, caring and empathic in my work with you. I will listen to your experiences and try to understand things from your perspective, without making judgements about you or your circumstances.

Providing a non-judgemental and safe place: I aim to provide a safe and non-judgmental space where you can talk about your thoughts, feelings and experiences. You can take the time you need to explore what is important to you.

What can individual counselling help with?

People come to individual counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a particular issue that they would like support with. At other times, they may simply know that something isn’t right or that they are finding life difficult to manage.
